Disability Liason Officer proves 'real gem' for Geraldton student

Su CooperSu Cooper describes her Disability Officer as a "real gem".

"Having to get around with a walking stick or wheelchair would have been hard enough without a Disability Officer to ensure I had access to all my classes. In particular, the officer arranged to have installed a specially fitted desk and chair that enabled me to sit in class for long periods of time."

Su completed a Diploma in Human Services last year at the Central West College of TAFE in Geraldton. She has since gone on to full-time study for a Bachelor of Social Science, majoring in Human Services and Addictions.

While the degree is being studied through Edith Cowan University, Su has continued to attend the Geraldton campus for classes.

"I have always worked with people, and being able to complete my degree will be the next step. Disability or not, I will never stop advocating for people who are disadvantaged. I have a big voice and want to continue to use it."

41 year old Su has been in and out of wheelchairs since a farm accident at the age of 16, when she was left with a serious spinal injury. With a degenerative condition meaning more permanent use of a wheelchair in the future, Su is grateful for the assistance provided to make the Geraldton campus more accessible.

"The Disability Officer is also the senior lecturer for my course of study, and was there for me from the very beginning. She directed me on the right course of study, and continued to be a constant source of encouragement and support," Su said.

"There were a lot of issues relating to people’s attitudes and a lack of access to campus facilities that needed to be dealt with. The staff proved to be far more aware than most of what changes needed to be made."
