Learning is for Everyone
Disability Services an added bonus for Andrew
When Andrew Potts started studying at the Central Metropolitan College (CMC) of TAFE in 1991, Disability Officers did not exist.
Andrew has cerebral palsy, but insists this did not prove to be a problem, although he was fortunate to choose a campus that was relatively suitable for students with physical disabilities.

"I was lucky to be attending CMC as the layout of the campus and buildings already catered for students like myself," Andrew explained. "For most students, including myself, you can usually struggle through if any problems arise."
Despite his independence, Andrew welcomed the introduction of a Disability Officer for the campus. "It was comforting to know there was someone who could help, and as it turned out, I was extremely grateful for the Disability Officer’s assistance."

Andrew admits that catching a bus everyday from Willetton to Perth was an effort, although at the time, he was just doing what needed to be done.
"Everyone at TAFE has always been supportive. I was able to take my exams on computer, and help was there if I had any problems with classes."

Today, Andrew has completed an Associate Diploma in Business, and is currently in the second year of a Bachelor of Commerce at Curtin University (Corporate Administration and Management double major).
While grateful for the opportunity to complete a degree, Andrew still believes that his time at TAFE was better spent.

"I found that TAFE was a lot more practical and realistic, which I think will in the long run give employers a better indication of what I can achieve."
